Qatar is intensifying mediation efforts between Iran and the United States in an attempt to improve Tehran’s latest proposal and keep negotiations alive, according to reports published on Monday.
An Israeli source cited by Yedioth Ahronoth said Qatari mediators have become deeply involved following Iran’s submission of a 14-point proposal that Washington reportedly dismissed as inadequate.
According to the report, Israel is concerned that US discussions with Iran are focused primarily on the nuclear file and reopening the Strait of Hormuz, without addressing Iran’s ballistic missile programme or allied regional groups.
The report said US President Donald Trump is seeking two principal outcomes: reopening the Strait of Hormuz and securing a nuclear agreement that would end Iran’s possession of enriched uranium.
At the same time, Israeli officials are reportedly pushing for renewed attacks on Iranian energy and infrastructure sites in an effort to weaken the Iranian government, exposing growing differences between Israeli and American approaches.
According to the Israeli source, Washington is weighing two options: launching a limited military operation designed to avoid broader escalation, or pursuing a temporary agreement that would reopen the Strait of Hormuz and allow negotiations to continue without resolving all disputed issues.
The report added that Israeli officials believe Trump is reluctant to resume a full-scale confrontation with Iran because of concerns over domestic political repercussions in the United States, including rising fuel prices and further economic damage affecting Gulf states.
