Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has said the club will wait until the end of the season before deciding whether to take up their option to sign Marcus Rashford on a permanent basis.
Rashford has enjoyed a new lease of life after joining the Spanish giants on a season-long loan from Manchester United, registering 14 goals in all competitions to help the club retain their La Liga title.
The 28-year-old has repeatedly expressed his desire to remain at Barcelona beyond the 2025-26 season, with his loan deal containing a clause which allows the Blaugrana to sign him permanently for €30million (£26m).
Speaking to reporters after helping his side win the league following the 2-0 victory over rivals Real Madrid at Spotify Camp Nou last weekend, Rashford said: “I don’t know [if I will stay]. I am not a magician, but if I was, I would stay.
“We will see. I came here to win. I want to win as many things as I can. This is one more to add to this.
“This is a wonderful team, they’re going to win so much in the future; to be a part of that would be special.”
However, according to The Athletic, Barcelona’s interest in triggering the clause has cooled, despite Rashford having stepped up in the wake of Raphinha’s injury issues.
And while expressing his gratitude to Rashford for helping Barcelona clinch a second successive league title under his stewardship, manager Flick insists no decision has been made over the forward’s future.
The German also revealed the same goes for Robert Lewandowski, who is being strongly linked with a move to Major League Soccer (MLS) ahead of his contract expiring at the end of the season.
“At the end of the season, we will analyse everything,” Flick told the media when asked about both players. “Then we will see what happens.
“Marcus gave us a lot. He has good numbers. I am thankful about that.”
And when speaking specifically about Lewandowski, with whom he won the Champions League at Bayern Munich in 2019-20, Flick added: “With Robert, what should I say? I have won every title with the club[s] with him. I am proud to be a coach for this amazing player. We have to analyse it and see what happens next season.”
Analysis: Carrick leaves door open for Rashford’s United return
While Rashford is keen to remain with Barcelona, United caretaker boss Carrick says no decision has been made on their end regarding the attacker’s future.
Speaking in mid-April, Carrick – who has been the architect of the Red Devils’ qualification for next season’s Champions League – told reporters: “There’s decisions to be made on certain things, and obviously Marcus is in that situation. But at this point in time, nothing’s been decided.
“It will be, because it has to be at a certain point, but at this stage, there’s nothing to say.”
