NPFL: NFF Suspends Referee Yakubu Adamu Indefinitely Over Controversial Penalty Decision

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Refereeing Development Committee has suspended referee Yakubu Adamu indefinitely from all football-related activities following his controversial penalty decision during the Nigeria Premier Football League clash between Rangers International F.C. and Bendel Insurance F.C.

According to the NFF, the suspension takes immediate effect after the committee reviewed the incident and concluded that the penalty awarded by Adamu was inconsistent with the provisions of the Laws of the Game.

The disputed decision led to a goal and significantly influenced the outcome of the encounter, prompting strong reactions from fans and stakeholders across the Nigerian football community.

In a statement, the committee stated that the referee’s action “brought the game into disrepute,” leading to the indefinite sanction pending further review.

The development adds to growing concerns over officiating standards in the ongoing 2025/2026 NPFL season.

Calls are increasing for improved referee assessment, accountability, and the possible introduction of advanced officiating support systems in the league.
