Referee Jarred Gillett decided to give Leeds United a penalty during Monday’s game against Tottenham, after Mathys Tel appeared to foul Ethan Ampadu
Tottenham were offered an instant explanation from referee Jarred Gillett after Leeds United were awarded a second-half penalty in Monday’s Premier League game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
After giving Spurs the lead early in the second half, Mathys Tel then turned from hero to villain as he fouled Ethan Ampadu inside the box, handing Leeds the chance to score from the spot.
As Tel tried to acrobatically clear the ball, Ampadu got there first with his head and the Frenchman caught the Leeds man with his boot, leading him to fall to the ground.
Gillett initially didn’t give the foul on the pitch, but, following a VAR review and a closer look at his pitch-side monitor, the Aussie decided to point to the spot.
Announcing his decision to those in the stadium and watching around the world, Gillett said: “After review, Tottenham No.11 commits a foul on the Leeds attacker. The final decision is a penalty kick.”
Meanwhile, ex-Arsenal and Leicester City forward Alan Smith delivered his verdict on the incident while on co-commentary for Sky Sports. He said: Tel didn’t know Ampadu was there, but he certainly catches him. It’s always dangerous trying that kind of kick in your own box.
“That’s where Calvert-Lewin likes to hit them, and if you hit them that hard not many keepers are going to stop it.“It was a dangerously high boot from Tel. Not much argument with that. He’s got time to adjust his body rather than go for the overhead. He doesn’t have to do it.”
