Liverpool’s hopes of landing RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande promise to be complicated by Champions League winners PSG, who have been in talks for the Ivory Coast star for weeks.
Andoni Iraola’s side have set their sights on signing Diomande this summer following a disappointing campaign from Cody Gakpo last time around.
A €100 million bid from the Anfield side has already been knocked back by the Germans, who have set an asking price of €120m that will be tested by PSG, according to Bild.
The German source states that Luis Enrique’s side are “seriously considering signing” Diomande, while claiming that the “mega-sum” that Leipzig are targeting is “achievable”.
Certainly, there are no concerns about the spending power of the French club, who may have taken a step back from their ‘bling-bling’ era but who retain healthy backing from their Qatari owners and are in a position to launch a massive bid should they see fit.
Last summer, for example, Les Parisiens beat a string of Premier League sides to the signing of Ilya Zabarnyi from Bournemouth in a deal worth €63m. Six months earlier, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia was signed in an €80m move from Napoli.
Liverpool return to the table
Liverpool, though, are not finished while Diomande himself appears increasingly tempted by a summer more.
Fabrizio Romano explained: “I can confirm that Liverpool will return to the negotiating table. The club are working intensively on the player’s side of the deal, presenting a strong financial package and outlining their long-term project.
“Behind the scenes, Liverpool are doing everything possible to secure the player’s approval. They believe he can become an important part of their future plans.
“RB Leipzig continue to insist that they want to keep Diomande. Their preference is to offer him a new contract, improve his salary and include a release clause that would allow him to make a decision about his future in 2027 after gaining further Champions League experience.
“However, with each passing week it becomes more difficult to retain the player. Interest from multiple clubs continues to grow and Liverpool are being particularly aggressive in their pursuit.”
Barcola an obvious alternative
If Liverpool were beaten to Diomande by PSG, the door would instantly be opened to a potential alternative.
Bradley Barcola, a two-time Champions League winner, is unsettled at Parc des Princes and would be the player to make way for the young Ivory Coast star in the French capital. Liverpool are considered to be one of his biggest suitors, although there is interest elsewhere in the Premier League for a player who has an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €70.7m.
Diomande, who is rated by FootballTransfers’ algorithm as the second most-promising attacker in the world behind only Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal, is the big prize though.
