Mikel Arteta will lead Arsenal into their first Champions League final in 20 years when they face PSG in Budapest at the end of May, and the Emirates side are set to reward the Spaniard appropriately.
Arteta has steered the Gunners back to greatness, with the North London side well on course to beat Manchester City to the Premier League title with just three matches of the season remaining.
With a historic double on the cards with just weeks of the campaign to go, the Arsenal board are ready to offer the Spaniard a new deal, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
Arteta set for new contract talks
Arteta is under contract until 2027, but with a year to run on his agreement, the Gunners are eager to prolong the stay of the Basque, who took command of the club in December 2019.
“Understand Arsenal are planning to offer Mikel Arteta a new contract in the summer,” Romano revealed on X.
“Plan already decided in March regardless of end of the season results.
“Arteta wants to focus on titles now but in love with Arsenal project and looking forward to talks.
“Deal on soon.”
What is Arteta paid?
Arteta’s current deal is reportedly worth around €11.5 million (£10m) per year but he may well point to Champions League final rival Luis Enrique as being the benchmark by which he measures himself.
His compatriot is also set to be handed a new four-year deal at PSG, which will be worth €20m per year, making him one of the best-paid coaches in the world.
Atletico Madrid’s Diego Simeone is the highest-paid manager in the world, earning €26m per year on a deal that still has 12 months to run.
Arteta’s achievements at Arsenal would seem deserving of a similar wage given the club was in the doldrums when he took over.
The former Manchester City assistant manager is closing in on 350 games in charge of the North London side.
He has won 214 of his 348 matches in charge of Arsenal, scoring 690 goals in the process. Only an FA Cup has followed by way of a major trophy, but more silverware appears just around the corner.
