Former Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha has admitted that turning down the chance to represent Nigeria remains one of the biggest regrets of his football career.
Reflecting on his playing days, Onuoha revealed that club commitments and concerns about losing his place at Manchester City heavily influenced his decision at the time.

“I regret it now,” he said.
According to the former defender, the fear of missing opportunities at club level made him prioritize his domestic career over international football.
“I was worried about my position at City,” he implied.
Onuoha explained that participating in competitions like the Africa Cup of Nations could have affected his standing at the club during a crucial period of his development.
“It felt risky then,” he noted.
However, with the benefit of hindsight, he now believes missing the opportunity to represent Nigeria was a major loss personally.
“I missed out on something special,” he added.
The former Premier League defender emphasized that his connection to Nigeria and his heritage has always remained strong.
“Nigeria means a lot to me,” he stressed.
For Onuoha, international football would have provided experiences and memories beyond club achievements.
“It’s something I think about,” he said.
