Team Nigeria delivered a strong overall performance to finish third on the medals table at the 15th African Armwrestling Championship held at the Borteyman Sports Complex from May 1–2, 2026.
The championship, which previously took place in Abuja, served as a key qualification event for the upcoming 2027 African Games in Cairo, Egypt.

Nigeria began the competition on a high note, dominating Day One with an impressive haul of seven gold medals, four silver, and ten bronze medals. The team also secured places in eight finals in the left-arm categories, underlining its strength across multiple divisions.
Building on that momentum, Nigeria concluded the tournament with a total of 16 gold, 9 silver, and 13 bronze medals, enough to secure third position overall. The performance placed Nigeria ahead of South Africa, who finished fourth on the standings.
Host nation Ghana topped the medals table with a dominant display, amassing 52 gold, 63 silver, and 34 bronze medals. Benin Republic claimed second place, completing a competitive podium lineup.
Nigeria’s performance in Accra highlights the country’s continued rise in armwrestling on the continental stage, with athletes demonstrating both depth and consistency across categories. The results also ensured that several Nigerian competitors secured qualification slots for the African Games, positioning the nation for a strong outing in Cairo.
Looking ahead, Madagascar has been confirmed as the host of the next edition of the championship in 2027. Attention will now shift to the African Games, where qualified athletes will compete for continental honors and further establish their dominance.
The Accra outing reinforces Nigeria’s growing presence in the sport, with expectations high for even greater success in future competitions.
