Casemiro has been named Manchester United’s Player of the Month for April amid a clamour from supporters to see him sign a new deal with the club. Fabrizio Romano has revealed the chances of that happening.
The Brazil international was once a much-maligned figure at Old Trafford but enjoyed a renaissance under Ruben Amorim and is now one of the squad’s most important players, along with Bruno Fernandes.
Supporters have appealed to the 34-year-old Casemiro to perform a U-turn in his thinking by chanting his name during recent matches, but it appears that the former Real Madrid star is set on leaving, according to transfer insider Romano.
He told his YouTube channel: “I am told that his decision is not changing,” he said. “Casemiro is leaving Manchester United at the end of the season. At least as of today, that is the situation.
“Despite some calls from Saudi Arabia, MLS remains a strong and real possibility. I told you several times that Inter Miami are in the conversation, and that remains the case. Inter Miami have been working on a deal for Casemiro since March, and I maintain that.”
Casemiro shapes Man Utd’s summer
United’s whole summer transfer window is set to be shaped with their challenge of replacing Casemiro.
The Red Devils want to add two new central midfielders to their ranks, with their dream signing being Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson. The Old Trafford club, however, find themselves in competition with their Premier League rivals for their leading targets, with Manchester City thought to be leading the way for the England star.
This makes another year of Casemiro all the more appealing.
Replacing Casemiro a herculean task
FootballTransfers has detailed how difficult it will be for Man Utd to replace the veteran, who has been one of the Premier League’s top central midfielders this season, according to analysis from SciSports. Indeed, this puts his performance ahead of even Bruno.
Replacing the veteran will be a costly endeavour for United, and one not lacking in risk. Casemiro, who has become an unlikely fan favourite, will leave big boots to fill.
United’s best option for the role is Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali.
SciSports indicates that the Italy international star has the most similar profile to the Brazilian in terms of his playing style.
Tonali, though, is a younger version. He’s also extremely quick and has similar stamina, while the data analytics firm believe the Italian could even act as an upgrade to Casemiro.
FootballTransfers has reported that Newcastle are bracing themselves for two or three sales this summer, so it’s up to Man Utd to ensure they get the pick of the crop in the form of the 25-year-old.
