Nigeria’s armwrestling team recorded a significant milestone on Day 1 of the 15th African Armwrestling Championship in Accra, as Oluwatobiloba Adedokun Stephen and Emmy Nwobodo secured qualification for the 2027 African Games in Cairo, Egypt.
Competing in the senior 100kg left-hand category, both athletes delivered impressive performances to finish on the podium alongside Egypt’s gold medalist, Mohammed AbdelRahman. Their results not only earned Nigeria valuable medals but also confirmed their places at the upcoming African Games.

Adedokun, popularly known as the “Mighty Man of Valor,” advanced to the final after a series of commanding displays. However, he narrowly missed out on gold after falling to AbdelRahman in a competitive showdown, settling for a well-earned silver medal.
Meanwhile, Nwobodo showed remarkable progress, claiming bronze to complete Nigeria’s podium presence in the category. His performance marks a significant improvement from the previous edition held in Abuja, where he finished fourth, just outside the medal positions.
Speaking after the event, Adedokun expressed satisfaction with his achievement and qualification. “I feel electrifying and fulfilled to be on the podium and also to have confirmed my qualification ticket to Cairo,” he said.
Looking ahead, the Nigerian athlete emphasized the importance of continued preparation.
“We will start preparations for the African Games after this championship, and I will continue to work hard as always. It has been God throughout,” he added.
The results highlight Nigeria’s growing strength in armwrestling, as athletes continue to make their mark on the continental stage. With qualification secured, attention now shifts to building momentum ahead of the African Games, where expectations will be high for podium finishes.
