As attention shifts to this year’s Super-4 competition among the promoted clubs from the second-tier Nigerian National League (NNL), former Super Eagles’ striker, Victor Nosa Ikpeba has called for better attention to domestic competitions.
Sports247 reports that the 1997 African Footballer of The Year, who made waves with AS Monaco of France and Borussia Dortmund of Germany during his heyday, stressed that the future of Nigeria’s football success depends on the league.
He averred that the NNL is a strong bridge between youth football and the top-flight Nigerian Professional League (NPFL), all of which he believes deserve better attention from everyone at all quarters across the country.
‘The Prince of Monaco’ reflected on his early days while playing for Eko Hotel FC of Lagos and pointed out that the interest given the regional league in those days encouraged young footballers to aspire for greatness with the national team.
“I started in the Lagos State Football Association League. Emphasis should be given domestic football. It’s very essential for the growth of football in Nigeria.
It should not be the Super Eagles only, but about domestic football. If we can get it right, we can produce stars for the future,” Ikpeba affirmed.
