British holidaymakers looked on in horror as their quiet dinner turned into a nightmare when gunmen stormed the restaurant they were eating in and shot an “innocent” waiter.
Angelo Pizzi, affectionately known as Lino, was carrying out his duties at the eatery when he was gunned down in a hail of bullets by the masked attackers.
Head waiter Mr Pizzi, 62, died at the scene. He had no criminal record and investigators say his slaying was a case of mistaken identity. A justice body specialised in investigating mafia-style organised crime, is leading the investigation into the killing.
The horrific attack took place at the Spaghetteria n.1 restaurant in Bisceglie in southern Italy last night (30 Apr).
According to reports, two hooded gunmen burst into the restaurant during dinner service and opened fire, firing off around 15 shots in a lightning attack that caused panic among diners.
Investigators have said they suspect the intended target was the restaurant owner, a man with previous convictions who was present at the time.
Tragically Mr Pizzi, described locally as a hardworking and decent family man, simply found himself in the line of fire, authorities said. Customers who saw the horrifying ambush unfold in the restaurant included a group of British tourists.
Forensic teams examined the scene late into the night and CCTV camera footage is being reviewed as part of the evidence gathering.
