The interim national team coach of Zimbabwe, Kaitano Tembo is cherishing the opportunity of lining his players out against the Super Eagles as ‘an opportunity to showcase their strength’ on May 26th at the 2026 Unity Cup in London.
Sports247 gathered that Zimbabwe will enter the game at Charlton Athletic’s Valley Stadium with memories of how they played two draws with Nigeria, home and away, during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, thereby giving them hope for an upset.

With that possibility in mind, Tembo is already talking tough, as The Warriors get set to face the defending champions in the mini-competition’s opening match, following which the winner will face Jamaica or India in the final.
Although Tembo admitted the three-time African champions have a star-studded squad, he reckoned that his players can hold their own against the Super Eagles once they go into the game with good organization and discipline.
Tembo added, “Nigeria is a top side with quality players. We respect them but we believe in our squad. We need good organisation, discipline and making sure the players understand their roles. It’s an opportunity for us to showcase our strength.”
Incidentally, Tembo only recently took over The Warriors’ technical reins after the shock departure of their immediate past coach, Marian Marinica, as the tactician from Romania resigned due to personal reasons.
Tembo steps into the role at a pivotal moment for Zimbabwean football and, having served as assistant under both Marinica and Michael Nees, he brings in continuity and a deep understanding of the current squad.
As he takes charge alongside his assistant, Takesure Chiragwi, Tembo has already cited the Unity Cup as an important take off point and submitted that the upcoming event will be a useful testing point for the values of continuity in his crew.
“Continuity is very important. I have worked closely with Coach Marian Marinica. That understanding of the players, the systems, and the culture within the team gives us a solid foundation to move forward without disruption.
“It is a great honour and responsibility. I want to thank them for the trust they have shown in me. Having worked within the national team set-up, I understand the expectations and the pride that comes with leading the Warriors,” Tembo stated.
