US Senator Tim Kaine said that he has “serious constitutional concerns” that the Trump administration may exceed its 60-day limit for military action in Iran without Congressional approval.
Under the 1973 War Powers Act, a US president can wage war without authorisation from Congress for 60 days – a deadline which will be hit on Friday.
Responding to questions from Kaine at a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said that the ceasefire with Iran grants the administration more time on this deadline.
However, Kaine replied that “I do not believe the statute would support that.”
