Chelsea have already lined up a few deals ahead of the summer transfer window.
Mike Penders could replace Robert Sanchez between the sticks next season. The 20-year-old goalkeeper, whom Chelsea signed from Genk for £17m in August 2024, has caught the eye while out on loan at Strasbourg, establishing himself as one of the most exciting young shot-stoppers in Europe.
Penders has started all but one of the French outfit’s games in Ligue 1 this season, keeping nine clean sheets. The Belgium Under-21 international has only conceded 39 goals, boasting the fourth-best defensive record in the division.
He’s helped Strasbourg, also owned by BlueCo, reach the semi-finals of the UEFA Conference League, too. Penders played a particularly key role in the dramatic 4-0 win over Mainz, pulling off a catalogue of saves to keep Gary O’Neil’s side in the tie.
The Belgian, who still has six years left on his contract at Stamford Bridge, has turned heads, and he looks set to give the next Chelsea head coach a headache when he reports for pre-season training after the World Cup.

football.london understands that the Blues will assess their options between the sticks in the summer. Senior figures at Chelsea believe Penders has the potential to become the long-term number one.
But, until the west Londoners appoint a permanent replacement for Liam Rosenior, it remains to be seen whether the Belgian will compete with Sanchez for minutes next season. In the meantime, Penders can only continue to showcase his ability at the very highest level.

Sky broadcasts more than 1,400 live matches across the Premier League, EFL and more with at least 215 live from the top flight alongside Formula 1, darts and golf.
According to the CIES Football Observatory, the Chelsea loanee has been valued at €47.3m (£41m), making him the most valuable young goalkeeper in the world. He’s closely followed by Jonas Urbig of Bayern Munich (€41m/£35.5m) and Robin Risser of RC Lens (€35m/£30.3m).
In fourth place is Rome-Jayden Owusu-Oduro (€19m/£16.5) of AZ Alkmaar, making him the most valuable young shot-stopper outside the traditional top-five European leagues. The CIES Football Observatory also points out that nobody among the top 100-rated goalkeepers under the age of 23 has played more minutes in official senior matches this season than Penders.
At the time of writing, the Belgian has 4,901 minutes in the tank. James Beadle, who’s currently on loan at Birmingham City from Brighton, is the only other top 10-rated under-23 goalkeeper to have played more than 4,000 minutes this term.
The next Blues boss will have a difficult decision to make this summer, with Sanchez already showing signs of improvement under Calum McFarlane. Fortunately for whoever takes the reins at Stamford Bridge next term, Penders has already had a taste of life in the Chelsea dressing room.
He worked closely with Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen at the Club World Cup last summer. Although Penders didn’t play, he relished the chance to get to know everyone.
In an interview with Het Laatste Nieuws after Chelsea defeated Paris Saint-Germain in the final, Penders said: “It was good to tag along and get to know the group. You get a sense of the high level of training during those five weeks.
“All the guys were pretty friendly, too. How do you approach that? You come in, shake everyone’s hand. I’m the kind of person who immediately starts talking.
“Ultimately, you realise they’re all just great guys. Every dressing room is a bit similar, you know. You have a group of Spanish speakers, a group of English people. You end up playing cards together.”
