Virgil van Dijk insists that Liverpool will “adapt” if legendary goalkeeper Alisson departs for Juventus this summer.
The Brazilian has become the subject of strong transfer speculation over the past week or so. Alisson is out of contract in the summer of 2027, so sorting his future is an increasingly pressing priority.
The upcoming transfer window will realistically be Liverpool’s final chance of generating a transfer fee for the 33-year-old. In this context, Juventus’ interest has come at a perfect time for the Reds.
While the Bianconeri will not pay big money for a veteran shot-stopper, shifting Alisson could nevertheless raise some funds and free up big wages, which will be necessary given that Liverpool are yet again planning to spend big.
On the flip side, Alisson’s departure would be damaging on the pitch and in the dressing room. To be sure, he has not been the same since his persistent injury problems began, but he is still one of the best goalkeepers in the world.
Van Dijk opens up on Alisson rumours
Alisson is said to be open to a move to Juventus. The idea of returning to Serie A appeals to the former AS Roma star, while the Old Lady’s offer of a three-year contract is also attractive.
However, as a club legend, Alisson has a strong relationship with Liverpool, and he will not force his way out. The final decision on whether or not he will be allowed to move will be made by the club. Liverpool will have to weigh up the pros and cons of his potential departure.
If it were up to captain Virgil van Dijk, Alisson would stay put. In quotes relayed by Sky Sports, the Dutchman admits that losing the goalkeeper would be a big blow, but he also insists that Liverpool would find a way to “adapt.”
“Listen, there is always going to be a day where you – including myself – will go,” Van Dijk began. “But if it’s going to happen – and I have no idea about it, and I don’t think at this point he has an idea about it – then we will, as a club, adapt to that.
“We have been through everything together, positive things and some negative things unfortunately as well, so it would definitely be a big blow and a miss, but I don’t think, for me, it’s a good idea to think ahead about what could or could not happen.
“He’s very important for me as one of the leaders in the team, and I think he is very important on the pitch because I think he is one of the best – in my opinion, the best – goalkeeper in the world.
“He’s trying to be back as soon as possible to help us for the last four games, and that’s our main focus. Whatever happens after that is not something you should ask me. Would I love him to stay? Of course, there’s no doubt about that.
“There are rumours, but if there is anything concrete, then we will all find out, but for me, I’m never worried.”
It will be fascinating to see if Liverpool will allow the legendary keeper to depart. It would likely necessitate the signing of a replacement. No.2 Giorgi Mamardashvili has not always looked convincing, while No.3 Freddie Woodman impressed against Crystal Palace at the weekend.
