A “heartbroken” Xavi Simons faces up to eight months out after rupturing his ACL at the weekend.
The Dutchman was chasing a stray ball alongside Hugo Bueno during Saturday’s match between Tottenham Hotspur and Wolves, when he jarred his knee on the turf.
Simons instantly went to ground, writing in pain, as Spurs medical staff quickly rushed over to treat him before he left Molineux on a stretcher. And now, the 23-year-old has learned the full extent of his injury.
Not only will Simons miss the rest of the season with Spurs, but he will also be unavailable for this summer’s World Cup in North America in a devastating turn of events. And taking to Instagram, the attacking-midfielder shared a highly-emotional update.
He wrote: “They say life can be cruel and today it feels that way. My season has come to an abrupt end and I’m just trying to process it.
“Honestly, I’m heartbroken. None of it makes sense. All I’ve wanted to do is fight for my team and now the ability to do that has been snatched away from me…along with the World Cup.
“Representing my country this summer…just gone. It’ll take time to find peace with this, but I’ll continue to be the best teammate I can be.

“I have no doubt that together we’ll win this fight. I’ll walk this path now, guided by faith, with strength, with resilience, with belief, as I count down the days to getting back out there. Be patient with me. TTP. COYS.”
It comes as yet another bitter blow as Spurs look to avoid relegation to the Championship for the first time since the Premier League’s inception in 1992.
At the time of writing, the Lilywhites sit 18th in the league standings headed into their final four matches of the season, two points shy of safety.
And Simons is not the only star that the club will be without as they look to finish strong against Aston Vila, Leeds United, Chelsea and Everton next month.
Cristian Romero is out of action for around eight weeks after partially tearing his ACL against Sunderland AFC, while Wilson Odobert is also on the long road to recovery for a knee issue.
