Two players of Nigerian descent, Calvin Hemery and Michael Mmoh, have secured places in the main draw of the ongoing ATP Challenger 75 Abidjan, highlighting Nigeria’s continued influence on the global tennis stage.

Hemery, currently ranked 354 in the world, has prior ties to Nigeria, having featured at the 2021 National Sports Festival in Edo State.
The Frenchman also claimed the now-defunct Lagos Open title in 2019, further cementing his connection to the country’s tennis scene.
Mmoh, ranked 248, is the son of Nigerian tennis legend Tony Mmoh.
Despite representing the United States, Mmoh has frequently been linked with a potential switch to Nigeria for Davis Cup competitions, though no formal move has materialised.
However, it was disappointment for Nigeria’s Daniel Adeleye, who fell short in his bid to reach the main draw.
The wildcard entrant was defeated 6-0, 6-4 by Germany’s Jeremy Schifris in the final round of qualifying.
Adeleye showed resilience by saving three match points during the encounter, but the comeback came too late as Schifris sealed a straight-sets victory.
Despite the loss, the outing offers valuable experience for the Nigerian, who continues to develop on the professional circuit.
The tournament, taking place in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, has attracted a competitive field of emerging and established players, with both Hemery and Mmoh set to represent Nigerian heritage in the main draw.
Their presence once again underscores the depth of talent linked to Nigeria, even as questions remain about converting diaspora potential into consistent national representation.
