Germany’s foreign minister on Monday urged the UN to play a more active role in resolving the conflict involving Iran and reopening the Strait of Hormuz, warning the situation is affecting the global economy, Anadolu reports.
“To resolve pressing issues of peace and security, the United Nations must become the linchpin of contemporary conflict diplomacy,” Johann Wadephul said before departing for New York to attend a UN Security Council meeting.
He criticized several Security Council members for blocking decisions and said the international community cannot afford such obstruction while facing multiple major conflicts simultaneously.
The top diplomat warned that Iran’s blockade of Strait of Hormuz is having a serious impact on global economy, particularly affecting poor countries and putting the world’s food supply is put at great risk.
“I will therefore advocate today in New York for the UN Security Council to live up to its role,” Wadephul said. “If the UN Security Council assumes responsibility now, it will also strengthen the international order,” he added.
Iran has effectively closed the key waterway since the US-Israel war that began on Feb. 28. The conflict is currently on hold and efforts for a permanent end are underway.

Deterrence against nuclear threats
During his visit to New York, Wadephul said he will also attend talks on the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty amid growing concerns about nuclear proliferation.
“We want to ensure the universal application of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, even though this is becoming increasingly difficult,” he said.
The foreign minister said a review conference beginning Monday would provide an opportunity to discuss safeguarding the treaty’s achievements as well as nuclear disarmament.
“However, as long as nuclear threats against us and our partners continue, we will still need credible deterrence,” he said.
