A 25-year-old footballer has been stabbed to death with a screwdriver while teens tried to steal the pizzas he was carrying.
Gabriele Vaccaro and two mates were returning to their parked car at around 3:30am on Sunday, April 19 in Pavia, Italy when they came across five youths. It is understood that an argument broke out and ended with one person allegedly stabbing Gabriele in the neck and abdomen.
The five people then fled the car park. Gabriele’s friends, not realising the severity of his injuries, took him home after the attack, the Star reports.
Paramedics were later called and his condition was determined critical. He died shortly afterwards in hospital.
Three of the five youths, two young men and a 17-year-old, have been arrested and questioned.
The minor, of Egyptian origin, is believed to have carried out the stabbing.
Investigators say CCTV footage appears to show him using a screwdriver as the weapon.
Police believe the confrontation began after the group demanded Gabriele hand over the takeaway pizzas he was carrying.
A local media outlet reported that the group said: “You can’t even carry pizzas properly. Give them to us instead.”
One of Gabriele’s friends also suffered a minor abdominal injury and was treated in hospital.
Originally from Favara, Gabriele was a postal worker and a passionate footballer who played for several clubs, including Atletico Favara, Casteltermini and Kamarat in the Promozione league.
Atletico Favara described him as “a good-natured young man, a sportsman, an example of politeness and passion”.
He is survived by his parents, two brothers and twin sister.
The investigation is ongoing.
