The Atlético Madrid forward picked up an adductor problem during the final and was forced off in the second half, raising immediate concerns about his fitness ahead of a crucial run of fixtures.

Results from tests conducted on Monday revealed swelling (oedema) in the adductor muscle, although the injury is not considered a severe tear.

Despite that, the discomfort has ruled him out of immediate action as the club adopts a cautious recovery approach.

As a result, Lookman will be unavailable for Atlético’s upcoming La Liga fixtures against Elche CF and Athletic Club, dealing a setback to Diego Simeone’s side in their push for a strong finish to the season.

The Nigerian international has been placed on an individual rehabilitation programme, working separately from the main squad to speed up recovery while minimizing the risk of aggravating the injury. Club medical staff are closely monitoring his progress on a daily basis.

There is particular concern over his availability for Atlético’s upcoming UEFA Champions League semi-final 2026 first-leg clash against Arsenal FC, a fixture that could define their European campaign. At this stage, his participation remains uncertain.

Despite the injury setback, Lookman delivered a historic moment in the Copa del Rey final, becoming the first Nigerian since Finidi George to score in the competition’s final.

He netted an equaliser before being substituted, underlining his importance to the team.

Atlético will now hope for a swift recovery as they navigate a critical period without one of their key attacking options.
