President of FIBA Zone B Sam Ahmedu has issued a strong warning to Nigeria’s representatives at the Basketball Africa League, Marktown Flyers, urging them to reinforce their squad ahead of the 2026 competition.

With the Flyers set to compete against some of the continent’s elite clubs, Ahmedu stressed that the level of competition in the BAL is significantly higher than what teams experience in the domestic league.
“It’s a different level,” he said.
According to him, relying solely on current resources may not be enough to compete effectively against more established and better-prepared teams.
“They must strengthen,” he implied.
Ahmedu emphasized the importance of building a well-balanced roster, combining skill, depth, and experience to handle the demands of the tournament.
“Preparation is key,” he noted.
For the basketball administrator, the BAL represents not just a competition, but a platform to showcase Nigerian talent on the continental stage, making it essential for the Flyers to approach it with seriousness and ambition.
“They must be ready,” he stressed.
He also pointed out that the gap between domestic and continental basketball is significant, and teams must adapt quickly to the higher intensity and tactical demands.
“You can’t take it lightly,” he added.
