Head coach Éric Sékou Chelle has revealed plans to blend experience with fresh talent as Nigeria prepares for the upcoming Unity Cup, with opportunities set to be handed to standout players from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) and foreign-born prospects of Nigerian descent.

Chelle disclosed that the invitational tournament will serve as a testing ground to evaluate new additions, while maintaining a strong core for high-profile international friendlies later in the year.
“The Unity Cup provides a platform to assess new players. I will comb Europe and invite new players of Nigerian descent, alongside those who were previously called up but never got the chance to feature.
Top players from the Nigeria Premier Football League will also be considered, as I will be watching a number of domestic league games from now until the end of the season,” Chelle said.
The Super Eagles are expected to defend their Unity Cup title, having lifted the trophy in 2025 under Chelle in what marked his first major success with the team.
The tournament, traditionally staged in London, has become a useful platform for squad rotation and talent discovery.
Since taking charge in January 2025, Chelle has built a reputation for integrating home-based players with established Europe-based stars.
His approach paid off during the 2025 Unity Cup triumph, where a mixed squad secured victory after a dramatic penalty shootout win over Jamaica.
Beyond the Unity Cup, the Malian tactician confirmed that Nigeria will field a full-strength squad for upcoming Grade A friendlies against European heavyweights.
“For the big warm-up games in June against Poland and Portugal, I will feature my first team players. These are games that can push us up the global ranking if we win them.”
Under Chelle, Nigeria have recorded impressive results, remaining unbeaten in competitive fixtures while showing marked defensive solidity.
Nigeria will defend the Unity Cup won in 2025 in May ,2026 with Jamaica, Zimbabwe and Zimbabwe in England.
In approximately 18 matches in charge, he has guided the team to 13 wins, four draws and just one defeat, coming in a friendly,while maintaining an unbeaten run in World Cup qualifying matches.
He also led Nigeria to qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where the team progressed from the group stage with a perfect record and remains a strong contender.
Chelle’s tenure has been defined by tactical flexibility, often deploying attacking systems such as a 4-3-1-2 or 4-4-2, alongside his emphasis on goal-scoring football.
His willingness to expand the player pool—particularly by scouting dual-national talents and NPFL standouts—signals a long-term vision aimed at strengthening squad depth and competitiveness.
With the Unity Cup approaching, attention will now turn to the players who seize this opportunity to stake a claim for a regular place in the Super Eagles setup.
