Chelle Set to Abandon Winning Formula Ahead of Super Eagles’ Tanzania Tests

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle is reportedly considering abandoning his trademark diamond formation ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying double-header against Tanzania.

Sports247 reports that the Franco-Malian tactician is weighing an alternative tactical approach as he seeks to make the Super Eagles more flexible, unpredictable and effective against different opponents.

Chelle has favoured the diamond system since taking charge of the national team, largely because it allows him to accommodate Nigeria’s wealth of attacking talent in a single formation.

The approach also delivered positive results at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where Nigeria finished third.

However, recent performances have raised questions about the system’s effectiveness, particularly when the Super Eagles face opponents capable of exploiting its weaknesses.

Chelle was forced to abandon the formation during the first half of Nigeria’s 2-1 comeback victory over Madagascar. The team subsequently suffered a disappointing 3-0 defeat away to Guinea-Bissau, further intensifying scrutiny of the tactical approach.

The report indicates that the former Mali international recognises that the diamond formation cannot be deployed successfully in every situation.

Factors such as opponents defending deep, playing away from home and difficult pitch conditions are believed to have influenced his thinking about adopting a more adaptable system.

Chelle has reportedly communicated to members of his close circle that a tactical adjustment is imminent as he looks to improve the team’s performances and strengthen Nigeria’s qualifying campaign.

The Super Eagles face an important challenge against Tanzania, with maximum points from the double-header expected to be a priority.

A change in formation could therefore represent a significant tactical development for Chelle, who must find the right balance between maximising Nigeria’s attacking options and ensuring defensive stability.

Whether he completely abandons the diamond or simply introduces greater flexibility remains to be seen. However, the Tanzania fixtures could provide the first indication of a new tactical direction under the Nigerian coach.
