Eight secondary-school teams have converged at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Sports Centre for Hoops for Tomorrow, a two-day basketball clinic and championship aimed at promoting grassroots basketball and youth development.
Organised by B9EM Management in partnership with the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos, the programme runs from November 5 to 6, 2026, with MILO (Nestlé) and Sports Assist serving as sponsors.
The initiative combines practical basketball training with competitive school-level action, giving young players an opportunity to improve their skills, gain match experience and develop a better understanding of the game.
The participating schools are divided into male and female categories, with four teams in each division.
In the male category, the participating schools are Federal Government College (FGC), Ijanikin; Government College, Lagos; Gaskiya Senior College, Badia; and King’s College, Lagos.
The female category features FGC Ijanikin, Cardoso High School, Badia, Gaskiya Senior College, Badia, and Egan Grammar School.
The programme began with a basketball skills clinic, featuring practical sessions focused on technical development, teamwork, coordination and tactical understanding ahead of the championship.
Beyond the competition, Hoops for Tomorrow highlights the importance of creating opportunities for young Nigerians to participate in organised sports, develop their abilities and gain exposure to competitive basketball from an early age.
The initiative is also associated with the U.S. Mission’s Freedom 250 campaign, which marks the 250th anniversary of American independence in 2026. The campaign provides a platform for activities celebrating the anniversary and promoting engagement with communities.
With the championship scheduled to conclude on November 6, attention will turn to the participating schools as they compete for honours in their respective categories.
Through its combination of training and competition, Hoops for Tomorrow places school basketball, youth participation and grassroots talent development at the centre of its two-day programme.
