Ex-NFL reporter Michele Tafoya loses Senate election in Minnesota after quitting TV to turn to politics

Former NFL sideline reporter Michele Tafoya was among the raft of Republican hopefuls to suffer a defeat in the Midterm elections on Tuesday night.

The 61-year-old veteran broadcaster was beaten in the Minnesota Senate race by Democrat Peggy Flanagan, the state’s lieutenant governor, despite backing from President Donald Trump.

Tafoya, who stepped away from sportscasting in 2022 after working at the likes of NBC and ESPN, was attempting to replace retiring Senator Tina Smith and flip the open seat in favor of the Republicans.

But she was edged out in the race, securing just over 43 percent of the vote against Flanagan’s 53 percent.

Tafoya was facing an uphill task, given Minnesota has not sent a Republican to the Senate since 2002. Her loss also came against the backdrop of a blue tsunami across America.

‘Minnesota, you just beat Donald Trump again,’ Flanagan said in her victory speech.

‘You said no more war, no more health care cuts, no more taking food away from children and seniors. No more selling this country off to the highest bidder. And you said no more masked goons shooting our neighbors and terrorizing our communities.’

The loss is a major blow for Tafoya’s political aspirations after she stepped away from her TV role in 2022 to be more vocal around conservative issues.

She launched a podcast and Substack to make her initial steps into political commentary and garner support among her fellow Republicans, who had been urging her to run for office for years.

While she’s considered a staunch conservative with solid MAGA credentials, the Minneapolis Star Tribune had warned that her ‘squishy’ positions on a few key issues could leave her vulnerable.

Tafoya leaned heavily into cultural issues throughout her campaign, placing her opposition to ‘biological men’ competing in female sports at the core.

The transgender athlete debate re-emerged as a central topic in the race after her Republican primary opponent Royce White claimed he would enter the WNBA Draft.

Tafoya campaigned vigorously on protecting women’s sports while also targeting public fraud scandals and advocating for increased law enforcement funding.

She also joined the likes of Riley Gaines at a Sophie Cunningham rally in Minneapolis after her comments regarding transgender inclusion in sports caused shockwaves around the WNBA and America.

Like the Minnesota Governor’s race, which saw Democrat Amy Klobuchar beat Republican state House speaker Lisa Demuth, the Senate race was shaped by the widespread fraud scandal and immigration crackdown in Minnesota.

But the Democrats returned two victories, even after the fraud investigation into stealing hundreds of millions of dollars from state-run social services programs exploded into a national embarrassment.

Dozens of people have been convicted of stealing hundreds of millions of dollars from state-run social services programs meant to provide food, shelter, healthcare and childcare to people in need.

Charges worked their way through the court system for years with little notice outside Minnesota until late last year, when a right-wing influencer’s videos went viral and drew the attention of President Trump.

The President trained his ire on the state government and Minnesota’s community of Somali refugees.

The President last winter used the scandal as justification for a violent crackdown on immigrants in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul metro area, galvanizing the liberal opposition to him.
