Xabi Alonso has reportedly asked the Chelsea hierarchy to explore a possible deal for Liverpool star Florian Wirtz if he becomes available next year.

The Germany international has endured a torrid run of form since his arrival at Anfield in 2025 and rumours suggest that Andoni Iraola’s side may cut their losses next summer if his performance level fails to improve.

Wirtz has only registered 21 goal contributions in 59 appearances for Liverpool, and he is still yet to find the back of the net in the Premier League this season.

He has been widely slammed by a host of ex-Liverpool stars throughout his time at the club, most notably Jamie Carragher, and it’s understood that Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich are keeping close tabs on his situation at Anfield as they eye a possible blockbuster deal.

Chelsea have also been linked with a move for Wirtz, mainly due to the fact that Xabi Alonso coached him to great success during their time together at Bayer Leverkusen, and a transfer could reportedly take place in 2027.

Following the signing of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, it appears unlikely that Chelsea will look to raid Liverpool for Wirtz next year, but TEAMtalk claim that Alonso has advised the club’s hierarchy to pursue a deal if he becomes available.

It’s reported that Chelsea are monitoring Wirtz’s progress at Liverpool, with Alonso a driving force behind their desire to secure his signature, and they could look to lure him to Stamford Bridge next year.

Andoni Iraola backs Florian Wirtz

While Wirtz has been heavily criticised by fans and pundits throughout his time at Liverpool, Iraola remains a huge believer in the 23-year-old.

“I think he is coming in from two very good games,” the Reds boss told reporters earlier this week. “He played really well at LASK away and the other day against Brentford. He helped the team a lot, in and out of possession, and I hope we can keep him there, no?

“You ask me basically every day about him, and we analyse and overscrutinise everything about him, but when he does well, also it is fair to say.”

As a result, Iraola could convince the Liverpool hierarchy to retain faith in Wirtz, much to Alonso’s frustration.
