Mikel Arteta has admitted that he cannot confirm whether Arsenal are interested in signing Manchester City striker Erling Haaland next year.
The eight-time Premier League champions have been found guilty of 114 financial breaches and while they have appealed the initial verdict, they are now awaiting their punishment, which could be as severe as expulsion from the English top flight.
There is no precedent for City’s punishment and, as a result, a host of their stars have been linked with blockbuster exits in recent weeks as Europe’s biggest clubs begin to circle.
As reported by FootballTransfers, Arsenal are among the teams keeping a close eye on the situation at the Etihad Stadium and we understand the Gunners will pursue a possible deal for Haaland if he becomes available to buy next year.
The Norway superstar has scored 169 goals in 205 games since his arrival at Man City from Borussia Dortmund, and he could realistically become just the second player in history to move clubs for a fee in excess of €200 million if he leaves Enzo Maresca’s side in 2027.
However, Arteta was keen to laugh off suggestions that Arsenal could sign Haaland when asked during an interview with The i Paper.
“You know I can’t respond to any of those questions,” he stated bluntly after being questioned whether he would sign the 26-year-old if he becomes available next summer.
What has Erling Haaland said?
While Man City are widely expected to receive a hefty punishment, Haaland has urged the club’s fans to remain positive.
Asked what he would say to the City supporters ahead of this weekend’s match against Liverpool, Haaland told Sky Sports: “They’re going to have a good time.
“We have to stick together. We have to stay with each other, and we have to stay positive. No matter what happens in life, we always have to have a smile. So we have to stay positive, look ahead, and try to win football games and try to enjoy the situation and win the game.
“We have to stick together; we have to spread the love to each other. So yeah: stick together, and enjoy the ride and smile.”
Barcelona, Liverpool and Real Madrid are also set to battle Arsenal for Haaland’s signature if he becomes available next summer, as per reports, but the striker insists that he remains happy at Man City.
“Yeah, I care a lot about this place and the UK generally,” he admitted.
“It’s a special place for us. I care a lot about the city, I have to say. I care a lot about the fans because I’m a fan myself, and I feel with them as well.”
