The forthcoming All Africa Challenge Trophy (AACT 2026) to be hosted in Abuja from November 2nd to 7th will provide Nigeria with a platform so show how far women’s golf has come in the country.
Sports247 reports that this verdict was passed by the former president of Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria (LGAN), Evelyn Oyome, who led a bid that won the hosting rights for the country during her tenure in 2024.
Oyome admitted she is very happy and quite excited that Nigeria will again host Africa’s premier female team championship, which she believes will bring a huge spotlight on the growth of women’s golf in the country.
With Nigeria already preparing to welcome top ladies from across Africa to Abuja for the third time, Oyome believes the championship is coming at a prominent time for women’s golf development and the country has a growing pool of female players.
She noted that they are not only competing at a high level but also building careers across different areas of the sport, from competitive amateurs progressing towards professional careers to women with roles as coaches, captains and administrators.
Oyome added with a tone of nostalgia, “The 2025 IBB International Golf and Country Club Ladies Open, for instance, attracted more than 450 amateur and professional golfers, both male and female, from over 50 clubs across Nigeria.
“They all competed alongside participants from other African countries. So, the development of women’s golf is being further driven by competitions and initiatives designed to increase participation and identify new talent.
“These efforts include expanding the game to more regions of the country and encouraging younger girls to take up golf. So, the opportunity to host the AACT is more than staging another continental championship.
“It provides Nigeria with a platform to showcase how far women’s golf has come while inspiring more women and girls to see a future in the sport.”
Sports247 also recalls that Nigeria previously hosted the AACT in 1996 at Ikoyi Club in Lagos and in 2010 at IBB International Golf in Abuja, where the 2026 edition will also be staged, marking the third time the country will host the prestigious event.
