Arsenal reportedly remain interested in signing Bayer Leverkusen defender Jarell Quansah despite the summer arrival of Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa.
Mikel Arteta’s side saw an initial approach worth roughly €65 million rejected by Leverkusen during the summer window and they eventually ended their pursuit of Quansah’s signature in favour of finalising a deal for his England team-mate Konsa, who joined the club for €59.6m in late August.
Konsa has quickly established himself as a key player at the Emirates Stadium, in the absence of William Saliba through injury, but it’s claimed that Arsenal remain interested in signing Quansah, who has been linked with both Chelsea and Real Madrid in recent days.
The 23-year-old has cemented his place as an England regular under Thomas Tuchel and his form for Leverkusen has attracted the attention of some of Europe’s biggest clubs ahead of the upcoming January transfer window.
A return to Liverpool remains Quansah’s most likely next step, due to a €70m buy-back clause that can be activated next summer, but the Reds will face strong competition for his signature, as confirmed by Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg.
He posted on X: “Jarell Quansah could leave Bayer 04 Leverkusen in summer 2027. Movement already happening behind the scenes. Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal are interested. Real Madrid are regularly scouting him.”
Liverpool receive Jarell Quansah verdict
While Arsenal are interested in signing Quansah next year, ex-Liverpool striker John Aldridge has urged his former club to trigger their buy-back clause.
“You know what I’d do? I’d be looking to bring back Jarell Quansah,” Aldridge told The Liverpool Echo. “There’s a £56m (€65m) buyback option on him and, for me, it’s a no-brainer. Next season, if Virgil goes, you’re looking at it and we could have [Ronald] Araujo, [Jeremy] Jacquet, [Giovanni] Leoni and Quansah. That’s four great options.
“Arne Slot didn’t fancy Quansah after that first game of the [2024/25] season against Ipswich. It showed as he didn’t really play him, didn’t really fancy him, but he’s proved Arne wrong.
“He’s gone to Leverkusen and is doing really well. He’s playing well for England. For me, you need four really good centre-halves.
“It’s a no-brainer to get Quansah back next year. Absolutely, 100%. 100%, man. As long as he wants to come. He’s a Warrington lad. I hope he’s a Liverpudlian, and if that’s the case, there’s no reason not to go and get him.
“Liverpool has the buyback. If they want him, they have to go and get him. And then next year, centre-halves-wise, we’d be really solid.”
