The spectacular revival of Barcelona’s renowned La Masia academy continues to provide a vital lifeblood to the Catalan side, which has struggled with sky-high debts and strict financial restrictions in recent seasons.

La Masia has come to the Blaugrana’s rescue, providing homegrown teenagers who have been the figureheads of the sporting and economic turnaround of the club.

Foremost among this new breed of Catalan superstar are Lamine Yamal, who has become the most valuable player ever, and Pau Cubarsi.

The result of this has been made evident on the field, where Hansi Flick has masterminded a slick, attractive and, particularly, successful side. Barca have won a perfect 21 points from their first seven league matches of the season, posting a massive goal difference of +24 in the process.

Golden ETV duo Yamal and Cubarsi solve Catalan concerns

Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsi now collectively represent a huge Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) for Barcelona.

The 19-year-old Lamine has a record ETV of €225.9m, which makes him the most valuable player of all-time.

Under contract until 2031 with a release clause of €1 billion, he is in superb form, having scored nine goals and provided seven assists in seven games for club and country in September alone.

At the other end of the field, there is Cubarsi, with the centre-back posting an ETV of €186m. The Golden Boy favourite is under contract until 2029 and, like Yamal, has received nominations for both the Ballon d’Or and the Kopa Trophy.

From a purely accounting perspective, these homegrown stars represent a huge jackpot for the club. After all, players from the club’s own youth academy appear on the balance sheet with a book value of nothing. Consequently, their presence generates hundreds of millions in unrealised added value and pure profit potential.

On top of this, the club did not have to spend hundreds of millions on transfer fees to sign equivalent players, while commercial revenues surrounding the pair are peaking: Yamal’s shirt is currently the best-selling in all of Europe.

Moreover, the club management did not have to spend hundreds of millions on transfer fees to bring in absolute top players. Meanwhile, commercial revenues surrounding the duo are also peaking: Yamal’s shirt is currently the best-selling football shirt in all of Europe.

Comparison with the star-studded Real Madrid

Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Junior form the focal point of arch-rivals Real Madrid.

The capital side have a spending limit of €833m compared to Barca’s €583m.

But despite this, the Catalans’ sporting capital can effortlessly compete with their counterparts from Madrid.

Cubarsi’s ETV, for example, surpasses that even of Mbappe and Vinicius Junior.

While Bellingham remains one of the most valuable midfielders in the world with an ETV of €139.5m, Mbappe is listed at €120.7m, partly due to recent injury setbacks. The Frenchman suffered a knee injury on international duty and is aiming to return in time for El Clasico on 25 October.

Vini Jr, meanwhile, has an ETV of €116.1m after a difficult start to the season that has seen him net only once in eight official games.

La Masia outmanoeuvres Madrid’s financial power

Hansi Flick has by now integrated no fewer than ten homegrown players into Barcelona’s first team. Alongside Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsi, established players such as Gavi, Fermin Lopez, Alejandro Balde, Marc Bernal and Marc Casado are also part of the team, supplemented by up-and-coming talents like Xavi Espart, Ebrima Tunkara and Pedro Rodriguez.

The enormous impact of the Catalan talent factory was evident on the very highest stage last summer. During the World Cup final, no fewer than nine La Masia products appeared on the match sheet.

While Real Madrid spend hundreds of millions on signing bonuses and salaries to compete internationally, Barcelona simply solves its own financial constraints with gold from its own breeding ground.
