Two Texas college football stars die in car crash after colliding with guardrail at 'high rate of speed'

Two Division-III college football players were killed after their SUV hit a guardrail on a highway in Texas, according to police.

A’Jean Augustine, 20, and Deyreck Dean, 23, were traveling south on State Highway 46 ‘at a high rate of speed’ when the driver lost control in the early morning hours on Monday, according to the Seguin Police Department.

Police told the San Antonio Express-News that the vehicle crossed into the opposite lane around 2:38am local time where they then collided with the barrier.

The driver and passenger were both pronounced dead at the scene, according to local affiliate KSAT.

Both Augustine and Dean were football players at Texas Lutheran University in the city of Seguin, a suburb of San Antonio.

It’s not clear who was driving the vehicle at the time of the crash. The incident forced police to close the road in both directions for multiple hours to clear the scene.

The school confirmed the deaths of both the students later on Monday.

‘Junior A’Jean (AJ) Augustine of Houston and senior Deyreck Dean of Rockwall, both student athletes, were beloved members of our community and we will long feel the impact of their loss,’ the university said in a statement.

According to the school’s athletic department website, Augustine was in his third year at the school as a place kicker. He was majoring in kinesiology.

In a post on Facebook, a woman who said she was a family friend wrote: ‘A’Jean was full of life, laughter, smiles and always [a] mama’s boy. Loved to play sports. He played soccer since the age [of] 3, then he moved on to football.’

Dean was a senior who played linebacker at the school and was studying business management. He was set to graduate next month, according to a Facebook post from a woman who said he lived with her family throughout his high school days.

‘We are heartbroken. His smile was contagious, big and beautiful. He was as forgetful as they come, but had a heart of gold,’ she wrote.

‘My kids lost a brother and no one can prepare them for this type of grief… You will always be part of our family. I love you.’
