The New Zealand rugby team was said to be heartbroken after its head of security, Logan Cadwallader, died suddenly at its Edinburgh hotel on Monday.
New Zealand Rugby said Cadwallader, a former special forces soldier and father of three children, died as a result of ‘a medical event’.
The All Blacks are in Edinburgh ahead of a Nations Championship test against Scotland on Saturday.
Speaking for the team, assistant coach Jason Ryan said Cadwallader, who had been the All Blacks’ security manager for 10 years, was ‘a great team member’ and a ‘quiet hero’.
‘This is something you don’t really prepare for, losing a team member,’ Ryan said. ‘I just want to, on behalf of the All Blacks, pass on our sincere condolences to Logan’s family, particularly his wife Nannette and three kids, Trey, Brooke and Mia.
‘I can tell you that the team is heartbroken. He had a massive influence on a lot of people in the All Blacks in the last decade. He was always looking ahead for us and always looking out for us and our families.

‘The country has lost a great soldier and we’ve lost a great team member. And we love him.’
According to The Times, the All Blacks had been staying at Edinburgh’s Radisson Blu ahead of the team’s match at Murrayfield.
Their head coach Dave Rennie told the publication that Cadwallader had been the ‘ultimate team man’.
‘Logan has been a big part of the All Blacks family for a long time,’ Rennie shared in a statement.
‘He was the ultimate team man, loved and trusted by all and a true professional. He looked after all of us, players and staff, and he was a good mate to many in this team. We are all devastated.
‘Our thoughts are with his wife, Nannette, his children, Trey, Brooke and Mia, and his wider family and friends. As a team, we will honour Logan and the legacy he has left on the All Blacks.’
A statement shared on social media was signed ‘Rest in Love’ by the players and staff.
‘A decorated soldier, a loving father and husband and above all, a great human being,’ the statement began. ‘Never stood in the spotlight, but was always one of the reasons those standing in it could shine.
‘Always respected and loved by your All Blacks family.
