Harriet Dart has achieved a major milestone in her professional tennis career after defeating Lilli Tagger to win her first-ever WTA singles title at the 2026 Guangzhou Open.
The British tennis star produced an impressive comeback to overcome the Austrian fourth seed 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in Sunday’s final, November 1, ending her long wait for a singles trophy at WTA Tour level.
Dart had to work hard for the victory after losing the opening set 6-4. Tagger started strongly and looked determined to add another title to her growing collection, but the British player responded with greater aggression and composure in the second set.
The 30-year-old raised her level to take the second set 6-3, forcing the final into a deciding third set.
With the championship within reach, both players battled for control, but Dart eventually found the breakthrough she needed to take the set 6-4 and complete an important victory.
The triumph represents a significant moment for Dart, who has spent years working towards her first WTA singles title. Her success in Guangzhou is particularly impressive considering that she had to come through qualifying before reaching the main draw.
She also showed tremendous determination on her way to the final, including a remarkable semifinal victory over China’s Sun Xinran. Dart recovered from a set down and saved three match points before eventually winning 5-7, 7-6(1), 6-0.
That fighting spirit carried into Sunday’s final, where she once again demonstrated her ability to handle pressure and deliver when it mattered most.
For Tagger, the defeat ends her impressive run in Guangzhou, although the young Austrian can take plenty of positives from another strong tournament performance.
For Dart, however, this is a moment she will remember for a long time. After years of competing on the professional circuit, the British star has finally secured her first WTA singles title, marking one of the biggest achievements of her career.
