He may one day make his dad emotional by winning the Six Nations with Scotland and could even tour as a British and Irish Lion. Yet the greatest achievement of Charlie Savala’s career will probably remain the moment he next steps onto a rugby field.
The Sydney-born Glasgow Warriors back has still to pull on his club’s jersey, having spent the past 18 months wrestling with calamitous injuries, thousands of miles from his family.
Savala, 26, is now only weeks away from finally conquering the physical and mental tortures that would have retired lesser men.
Glasgow’s match v Benetton on December 5 has been earmarked for the green light to flick back on for a career that has been up on bricks – all while younger brother Hugo has been ripping it up in rugby league back in Australia and breaking into the international scene with England.
That’s why, if selected, it could be the most significant triumph on Savala’s CV.
He suffered an ACL rupture in his left knee in April 2025, shortly after agreeing to join Warriors from Northampton, then a stress fracture in his other knee having just resumed full training last summer.
Charlie Savala is targeting a return to action next month after 18 months of injury hell
But Savala, a 6ft 4in half-back with the adaptability to play anywhere in the backs, insists his ordeal has left him tungsten-tipped for whatever life throws at him next.
He told Daily Mail Sport: ‘Glasgow have shown immense faith in me, which I’ll be forever grateful for.
‘I’ve had a lot put on my plate the last 18 months, on and off the field — being away from your family and wanting to contribute and be a rugby player. It’s extremely frustrating; you sometimes feel like you’re just a gym athlete.
‘I wouldn’t wish it upon anyone. I’m still in the middle of it right now and it’s hard to reflect on it. But all these mental challenges will hold me in good stead for the back end of my career.
‘The international break will give me the chance of a bit of one-on-one with the physios and the strength and conditioning coaches to make sure I’m fine-tuned and ready to go.
‘I have full confidence in my body. I just know this is going to be a good year for the club, and I’m very excited to be a part of that.’
Savala’s parents are both British ex-pats. Scott had been a promising youth footballer with Kilmarnock and Ayr United’s academies and Teresa an Oxfordshire nursing student when they met as teenage backpackers in Sydney’s Coogee Bay Hotel bar.
Savala looked a top prospect when breaking through at Edinburgh but his career has stalled
Charlie and Hugo were educated at The Scots College – ‘raising fine young men since 1893’ – where the Auld Country is proudly woven into the culture, and they were coached by ex-Wallaby international half-back Brian Smith.
They both joined the rugby league pathway at Sydney Roosters, but it was Covid-19 that sent the brothers veering off in opposite directions as the junior game locked down.
Charlie had been earmarked for Scotland’s Rugby League World Cup campaign in England in 2021, but the tournament was postponed.
Instead, he leapt at the offer to swap codes and join Edinburgh in the URC, his form earning him a move to Northampton and a call-up to the national squad in 2023, though he’s yet to make a debut in the dark blue.
Meanwhile, Hugo, 24, stayed at the Roosters, winning the NRL Grand Final earlier this month, and he’s starring for England in league’s World Cup currently being staged Down Under.
Charlie said: ‘Brian Smith’s big thing was no matter who you are, it’s not about the money, you want to be in a good, professional environment as early as you can. I took his advice and took the chance with Edinburgh.
Savala’s brother Hugo is a rugby league star in Australia and a full England international
‘I made that decision [on the] spur of the moment. I spoke to my family and, deep down, they didn’t want me to go, but I think my mum and dad wanted me to chase my dream which I’d had as a kid.
‘Hugo was lucky enough to stay and have that opportunity to play for [the Roosters], and he’s gone on and done great things.
‘I’m extremely proud as an older brother. But then you look back and, being as competitive as you are, you want to experience that same sort of feeling he’s having.
‘We’re athletes who want to represent our family and perform for our clubs. I don’t really want to wait for things now. I’ve got goals and dreams that I want to achieve.
‘My accent’s a bit different, but I’ve actually got no Australian blood in me at all. I’ve got aspirations to play for Scotland, and that will never die for me.
‘Seeing my dad so passionate about me playing for that school — the bagpipes and the kilts and the strong Scottish connection…
‘Everyone knows how amazing it is at Murrayfield. I think that emotion that I saw in him as a young kid, me being able to represent him and that side of our family would mean everything.’
Savala earned a Scotland call-up in 2023 and has not given up hope of returning to that stage
Despite the 10,000 miles between them, family remains close to Savala, and he surprised his parents with an unannounced brief Christmas visit last year.
The latest prodigy off the family conveyor belt is 17-year-old sister, Lolita, who is about to turn pro in Aussie rules football.
And even though they’re currently separated by both code and country, Charlie has plans to eventually team up again with Hugo.
In that ambition, he admits he’s been envious of Australian-born Warrior teammate Sione Tuipulotu who has lined up with his siblings Tavi for Glasgow and Mosese in the Scotland camp.
Charlie said: ‘I would love to play with Hugo. That’s something we speak about. Where and in what code? I have no idea!
‘But seeing how much it means to Sione watching his two brothers playing alongside him, it’s what you want.’
