Nigerian table tennis sensation Matthew Kuti has revealed how his father’s decision to steer him away from football completely transformed his sporting career, turning an initially reluctant youngster into one of Nigeria’s promising talents on the international stage.
The rising star, who is preparing to represent Nigeria at the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Senegal, disclosed that football was originally his preferred sport before his father, a table tennis coach, convinced him to embrace a different sporting path.

Speaking exclusively to Sports247, Kuti expressed deep appreciation for the role his father played in discovering and developing his talent, admitting that table tennis has completely changed his life.
“Table tennis means a lot to me because table tennis has changed my life, changed everything about me. It means a lot to me,” Kuti revealed.
The youngster explained that his introduction to the sport came through his father’s guidance, despite his initial interest in football.
“Before, I was playing football. My father told me, ‘You can’t play football. Table tennis is your way,’” he recalled.
Rather than resisting the decision, Kuti accepted his father’s advice and began training under his supervision, gradually developing a passion for the game.
As his skills improved through consistent training and participation in tournaments, the young player began to recognise the opportunities table tennis could offer.
Now, Kuti is preparing for one of the biggest challenges of his emerging career, representing Nigeria at the Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal, from October 31 to November 13.
