Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has told his former club to re-sign Trent Alexander-Arnold amid his struggles under Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid.
The England international left Anfield to join Los Blancos last summer and he was widely slammed by Liverpool fans for his decision to depart his boyhood club less than one month after they won the 2024-25 Premier League title.
Alexander-Arnold endured an injury-hit debut campaign at the Bernabeu, and he has fallen out of favour under Mourinho, with summer signing Denzel Dumfries and Federico Valverde, who is naturally a central midfielder, currently ahead of him in the pecking order.
The 28-year-old has only started four matches across all competitions so far this season and he has already been an unused substitute in six games since Mourinho returned to the club as the replacement for Alvaro Arbeloa.
As a result, Alexander-Arnold has unsurprisingly been linked with a Real Madrid exit in recent weeks and reports suggest that a host of Premier League clubs are keeping close tabs on his situation, with Chelsea believed to be among his suitors.
Liverpool are also watching with interest as they consider a possible move for their former star.
Barcelona loanee Ronald Araujo has cemented his place as Andoni Iraola’s preferred right-back in recent weeks, but the Reds remain understaffed in defence due to the injury woes of Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong, and Carragher has admitted that he would like the club to bring Alexander-Arnold back to Anfield.
Liverpool told to re-sign Trent Alexander-Arnold
“I’d have him back,” Carragher told The Overlap (via The Mirror). “Give him plenty of stick, [because] I think he made a mistake. I think he made a big mistake.
“But, as I said, if something benefits Liverpool Football Club going forward… And when you think of the problems Liverpool have in terms of the right-back. Ronnie [Ronald Araujo] has been fantastic, but we do have a problem in terms of full-backs passing. We’ve definitely missed his creativity.”
Carragher added: “At the moment, he’s actually third choice right-back for Real Madrid. They’re playing a midfield player [Federico Valverde] at right-back, so even in El Clasico, Denzel Dumfries, the first-choice right-back, comes on as a sub.
“So when you’re third choice at a club, they’re obviously wanting you. Move on.”
