“More Than a Celebration of Sporting Excellence” — Oshodi Hails Nigeria’s 2028 African Table Tennis Hosting Rights

President of ITTF Africa, Waheed Enitan Oshodi, has described Nigeria’s hosting of the 2028 ITTF Africa Championships as an opportunity to unite the continent’s table tennis community and strengthen the development of the sport.

Nigeria secured the hosting rights ahead of Tunisia at the ITTF Africa Annual General Meeting in Tangier, Morocco, with Lagos set to welcome leading players, coaches, administrators and other stakeholders from across the continent.

Oshodi believes the championship will provide more than a platform for athletes to compete for continental honours, stressing its importance in bringing together Africa’s diverse table tennis family.

“It is more than a celebration of sporting excellence,” Oshodi said.

“It is an opportunity to bring together our diverse African table tennis family once again, united by a shared passion and ambition for the growth of our sport.”

His remarks underline the wider significance of the championship as Nigeria prepares to host one of Africa’s major table tennis competitions.

The event is expected to attract participants from across the continent, creating opportunities for sporting exchanges, stronger relationships and discussions on the future of African table tennis.

Nigeria’s successful bid also represents an opportunity to showcase its organisational capacity and strengthen its reputation as a destination for international sporting events.

The country has considerable experience hosting continental table tennis competitions, particularly in Lagos, which has welcomed leading African and international players over the years.

For Oshodi, the 2028 championship offers an important platform to build on those foundations while promoting unity among member associations.

The event will also provide Nigerian players with the opportunity to compete on home soil against some of Africa’s strongest table tennis talents.

With preparations expected to gather momentum ahead of 2028, attention will turn to infrastructure, logistics and collaboration among stakeholders to ensure a successful tournament.

Oshodi believes the championship can leave a lasting legacy by strengthening the bonds within African table tennis and advancing the sport’s growth across the continent.
