From Heartbreak To Triumph! Nigeria Ends African Boxing Championships With Five Medals As Tournament Concludes Today In Nairobi

NAIROBI, KENYA — Team Nigeria has concluded its campaign at the 2026 African Elite Men’s and Women’s Boxing Championships in Nairobi, Kenya, with an impressive haul of three gold medals and two silver medals, as the continental tournament officially reaches its final day today.

The achievement represents a remarkable turnaround for Nigeria’s 10-member boxing contingent, which endured several disappointing defeats during the early stages before producing a strong finish.

Ajishola Khadijat opened Nigeria’s gold medal account with a commanding 5–0 unanimous decision victory over Algeria’s Malak Noir E in the women’s 51–54kg final.

Precious Anine followed with Nigeria’s second gold medal after defeating Algeria’s Benane Djouher in the women’s 60–65kg category.

Team captain Blessing Orakwe delivered another spectacular performance, knocking out Kenya’s Akinyi Elizabeth in the first round of the women’s 75–80kg final to secure Nigeria’s third gold medal.

However, Nigeria narrowly missed out on two additional gold medals.

Patricia Mbata settled for silver after losing a closely contested 3–2 points decision to Egypt’s Aboelfead Nabila in the women’s 70–75kg final.

Similarly, Ridwan Raheem suffered a heartbreaking 3–2 points defeat against Angola’s Bernardo Massimino Sander in the men’s 65kg final, earning Nigeria’s second silver medal.

With the championship concluding today, Thursday, October 22, the Nigerian contingent can reflect on a campaign defined by resilience, determination and an impressive recovery from early setbacks.

Cross River State head coach Mary Obo Ekpo had earlier predicted that Nigeria would return home with multiple medals despite the team’s difficult start.

Her prediction has now become reality.

The five-medal finish also provides encouragement for Nigeria Boxing Federation President Adebayo Olawale Edun, Vice President Omonlei Yakubu Imadu, and Head of Delegation Capt. Rasulun Kashim.

As the curtains fall on the African Boxing Championships in Nairobi today, Nigeria departs with five medals, three continental champions and renewed confidence in the future of its boxing programme.
