Nigeria’s female cadet national team, Flamingos are bound to unleash more fury in all their subsequent matches at the ongoing FIFA Women’s U17 World Cup in Morocco, starting with Friday’s last group match versus the defending champions, Korea DPR.
Sports247 reports that this prediction came from one of the team’s marquee players, Kemi Adegbuyi, who netted the Flamingos’ first goal in their 2-0 victory over Puerto Rico on Tuesday, which put them back in contention after their opening 2-1 loss to Poland.
Although their next game is against a team that has 12 goals in just two matches – 6-0 versus Puerto Rico and 6-1 over Poland on Tuesday – Adegbuyi is staying upbeat about the Flamingos’ chances, as she believes their first win of this championship is just the beginning.
Her verdict comes in the context of her first goal of this ongoing competition in Morocco, while also emerging as best player of the match, all of which she believes will spur her to achieve more for herself and the team, while bringing pride to her family and Nigeria as a whole.
The product of FC Robo Queens of Lagos, who last played on loan at Edo Queens of Benin City, hit target midway through the first half, followed by an injury-time effort from Precious Oscar for Nigeria to edge past Puerto Rico, who are now out of the championship with two defeats on the bounce.
Afterwards, Adegbuyi, who was the biggest threat for Nigeria in the second period and almost scored a brace, but sent her effort just over the bar from a corner, gave a strong hint that she will put in more efforts in order to make the Flamingos fly higher in the competition and give global honour to their country.
“The game was not easy for us, but we tried our best and we were able to get the three points. I’m happy and very excited, because this is my first goal in these tournaments, on the biggest stage.
“I’m very happy to score here, on the biggest stage of my life, because this is just the beginning. I promise to make my family and the whole nation proud,” Adegbuyi retorted gleefully.
