Angry Barcelona launch complaint after PSG ultras displayed 'chainsaw massacre' banner before Champions League defeat in Paris

Barcelona have reported Paris Saint-Germain to UEFA for the ‘chainsaw massacre’ banner displayed during Tuesday night’s Champions League match in the French capital.

The banner carried the slogan ‘Massacre, Parisien style’ and depicted a blood-spattered masked man in a PSG shirt cutting through a Barcelona crest with a chainsaw.

Pyrotechnics gave the effect of sparks flying as the saw made contact, while the chainsaw also appeared to be covered in blood.

ESPN has reported that a source said the imagery evoked was both ‘overly aggressive and offensive’.

Daily Mail Sport understands UEFA will wait to see if the banner is mentioned in the match delegate’s report before deciding whether to take action.

As for on the pitch, PSG ran out 4-2 winners in a thrilling game between two of Europe’s most in-form sides.

Desire Doure, Lucas Hernandez, Vitinha and Fabian Ruiz were all on target as PSG made it three wins out of three in the Champions League this season, and firmly established their lead at the top of the league standings.

PSG manager Luis Enrique was delighted with what he saw from his players against his former club.

‘What I loved is how the players were capable of playing a sensational first half defensively, winning a lot of balls with the high press and creating chances to score more goals,’ he said.

‘And then we overcame difficult moments in the second half when Barca had 15 minutes when they dominated and were better. But we are a team that adapts to whatever happens on the pitch.

‘I think we played aggressively, strong. You can see how difficult it is to press players of this level: Pedri, Lamine, Olmo, Raphinha, (Anthony) Gordon, Espart, (Pau) Cubarsi. They are talented as individuals and as a team. This is the best level we could come up against.’

For Barca, who twice levelled through Xavi Espart and Lamine Yamal, this was their first defeat of the season, bringing an end to their 11-game winning streak.

PSG have been in scintillating form in Europe this season since defending their title in May, beating Manchester City and Barcelona by the same 4-2 scoreline this month.

But Tuesday’s latest victory has come at a cost, as winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia is set for a long-term lay-off after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament.

The European champions confirmed Kvaratskhelia, who received extensive treatment early in the second half of the 4-2 triumph at Parc des Princes following a challenge with Xavi Espart, will have surgery ‘in the coming days’.

A statement on PSG’s website on Wednesday morning read: ‘Victim of a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during yesterday’s match against FC Barcelona, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia will undergo surgery in the coming days.’

The 25-year-old Georgia captain’s injury setback is a major blow for PSG, who are in pursuit of a third straight Champions League crown.

Kvaratskhelia has emerged as one of the world’s leading forwards since joining the French champions from Napoli for £59million plus add-ons in January 2025.

The club also confirmed that France forward Ousmane Dembele and captain Marquinhos will be out of action for ‘the coming weeks’ due to thigh injuries.

Both PSG and Barca have big games to come in their respective leagues this weekend.

PSG face Lyon in a top-of-the-table clash in Ligue 1, while Barca host rivals Real Madrid in the Clasico.
