Cristiano Ronaldo has been handed a 30-day suspension and fined €255 (£215) by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) after leaving the national team camp in September.
The 41-year-old Portugal captain left the squad after being an unused substitute against Norway and learning that he would not start against Denmark on October 1.
Ronaldo later explained that he left because Portugal coach Jorge Jesus had twice broken his word, describing the situation as a breach of trust.
However, the suspension will not affect his availability for Portugal’s upcoming matches because the ban started on the day of the Denmark game. He has already served 19 days of the suspension.
Portugal are scheduled to face Denmark again on November 14 before travelling to Wales three days later.
In explaining its decision, the FPF disciplinary committee said it considered Ronaldo’s remorse, his contributions to football and his sporting achievements.
The committee also revealed that the forward submitted his career achievements and awards as part of his defence.
Ronaldo had earlier accepted responsibility for his actions and apologised to his team-mates and supporters, adding that he deserved to be punished.
Portugal coach Jorge Jesus denied reaching any agreement with the forward but has left the door open for his return to the national team.
FPF president Pedro Proença also expressed a strong desire to have Ronaldo back once the matter is resolved.
The Al-Nassr forward has scored 146 goals in 234 appearances for Portugal, making him the men’s international football record goalscorer. He has helped his country win Euro 2016 and two UEFA Nations League titles.
Ronaldo joined Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr in December 2022 and signed a contract extension last year.
