Manchester United have learned Goncalo Ramos has made an “underwhelming” start at AC Milan amid speculation linking them with Joshua Zirkzee.

The Serie A giants broke their transfer record when signing Ramos from Paris Saint-Germain for €73.1million (£61.6m) in the summer.

However, the 25-year-old has made a slow start to life in Italy, recording just three goal contributions (two goals, one assist) for Milan.

Ramos found the back of the net in the wins over Venezia and Red Bull Salzburg, while he also teed up Adrien Rabiot in the victory over Lecce.

And Gazzetta dello Sport writer Andrea Ramazzotti believes Ramos is yet to live up to the expectations of the Milan fanbase.

Ramazzotti said of Ramos: “The Portuguese forward, formerly of PSG, is the goalscorer from whom (Gerry) Cardinale (Milan owner) expects the goals that will lift Milan back to the top – at the very least, securing a spot in next year’s Champions League.

“So far Goncalo has underwhelmed; in the league, he has only found the back of the net against Venezia (his only goal at San Siro). While he has put in a great deal of running – often outworking all his teammates – he has struggled in front of goal, partly because he has been served by crosses from deep rather than through the kind of tight, intricate play he prefers.

“Consequently, he failed to register a single shot on target against Juventus, Lazio, and Lecce. In Reggio Emilia, he came close to scoring, and he finally found the net after coming on as a substitute in Salzburg on Thursday.

“This maiden European goal for the Rossoneri, combined with the three he scored for his national team during the international break, could provide the momentum he needs to become a key figure this autumn – and prove that the [73million] paid to the Emir of Qatar was money well spent.

“(Manager Ruben) Amorim, who pushed hard to sign him, and Cardinale, who secured his arrival before the transfer window even opened – beating out the competition – have no doubts about the investment and remain convinced that Goncalo will prove to be a decisive player for the Rossoneri.”

Zirkzee linked with Milan ahead of January window opening

The news comes as Milan continue to be loosely linked with Netherlands international Zirkzee ahead of the January transfer window opening.

Zirkzee is yet to make a single start for United this season despite the absence of striker Benjamin Sesko, who is sidelined with a shin injury.

The 25-year-old joined United from Italian side Bologna in July 2024 but has struggled to impress at Old Trafford, scoring just nine goals in 81 games.
