Former Super Eagles coach Clemens Westerhof has been diagnosed with colon cancer in the Netherlands, with his family appealing for prayers and support as the 86-year-old football tactician faces a serious health challenge.
Westerhof is receiving treatment at Rijnstate Hospital in Arnhem, his hometown, following the diagnosis. The development has left his family devastated, with concerns also emerging over his medical care and the possibility of transferring him to another hospital.
His wife, Lilian, has appealed for prayers and assistance as the family navigates the difficult period. She has also expressed concerns about his current treatment arrangements, with the family reportedly considering moving him to a hospital in Amsterdam or Germany.
The latest health challenge comes after the former coach reportedly lived with Alzheimer’s disease, adding to the concerns surrounding his condition.
Westerhof remains one of the most influential foreign coaches in Nigerian football history, having led the Super Eagles between 1989 and 1994 in a period widely regarded as a defining era for the national team.
Under his guidance, Nigeria qualified for the FIFA World Cup for the first time in 1994, achieving a historic milestone that elevated the country’s profile on the international football stage.
He also guided the Super Eagles to victory at the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia, ending Nigeria’s 14-year wait for another continental title.
The triumph further cemented his legacy in Nigerian football, as he helped assemble a talented squad featuring players who would go on to become some of the country’s most celebrated football stars.
Beyond the two major achievements in 1994, Westerhof led Nigeria to second place at the 1990 Africa Cup of Nations and third place in the 1992 edition.
During his tenure, the Super Eagles also climbed to fifth in the FIFA world rankings, reflecting the team’s growing strength and competitiveness in international football.
His influence extended beyond tournament results, as the team he built laid the foundation for Nigeria’s emergence as a major force in African football during the 1990s.
As news of his diagnosis emerges, attention has turned to his recovery, with prayers and support being sought for the man who played a significant role in one of the most memorable chapters in Nigerian football history.
