In the space of two minutes and 55 seconds, Lisandro Martinez eviscerated a Manchester United hierarchy that for too long have been found hiding in the shadows.
Moments after a 2-0 defeat away to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, there was Martinez, fronting up as a senior player, for the post-match interview. There was Martinez, too, with a look in his eyes that suggested quite clearly he had something he wanted to get off his chest.
‘I have to control myself a lot,’ the Argentine said, fuming as he did so. The truth is, the fury in his eyes was obvious and in the end director of football Jason Wilcox, CEO Omar Berrada and the other shot-callers at United would all get it.
‘I don’t think so,’ Martinez said when asked if boss Michael Carrick, who desperately needed a left back all summer but was left without one arriving, was backed in the summer.
‘He does his best. You can’t keep changing, changing, changing the manager.
‘What about other areas? Tonight it is easy to say the coach and easy to say the players, but also we have to see other areas, huh?’

And then Martinez kept going and going as fans across the globe – and no doubt those in the United boardroom – watched on in total disbelief.
‘I expect more (investment) 100 per cent. I expect more from our technical director. I have to be honest.
‘As players we have to do more but it is also important when you make a strong squad to be ready for this kind of night.
‘I have to control myself a lot but sometimes is a reflection of the mirror of how is our club at the moment.
‘We did a fantastic season last season and now we expect more from the top; more players to compete because many teams bring many players as well.’
For all the defeats and disappointing displays, this blockbuster three minutes is the story of United’s season so far.
With that being said, Daily Mail Sport takes a closer look at the key questions it has thrown up.
WAS MARTINEZ RIGHT?
Absolutely.
The holes in Manchester United’s squad were obvious the second the final whistle blew at Brighton on the final day of last season and many are still rearing their ugly head now.
They desperately needed a left back – didn’t get one. That meant with Luke Shaw missing the Atletico Madrid trip, Martinez was having to coach young Ayden Heaven, a centre back by trade, through the game and while he did admirably in the circumstances, frustration at that being allowed to happen is obvious.
They needed a total overhaul of the midfield and spent £155m in doing so, bringing in Carlos Baleba (£70m), Andrey Santos (£50m) and Youri Tielemans (£35m) and each have shown flashes, but none look to be the absolute elite from the early showings. Baleba has the potential to get there.
They desperately needed a back-up centre forward in case Benjamin Sesko went down – he has and may be out for a considerable amount of time if surgery is sanctioned – and didn’t get one.
Wilcox has green lit internal interviews when things went well in the past and previously played down the need for megastars.
Manchester United are without a win in five and look to have taken a step back on last season
‘It’s not about putting the Harlem Globetrotters together,’ he said in November 2025.
‘If I look at successful Man United teams, there were very functional players that would die for the badge and there were some mavericks.’
Those sides also had a clear identity and that’s severely lacking from the very top right now.
Berrada spoke about the transfer plans early in the summer but now it’s time for Wilcox to front up and speak.
He’s got away with not doing so for way too long. Martinez was heavy-handed but, in truth, enough is enough.
HAS HE GOT PREVIOUS FOR THIS?
Yes.
Back in 2022 when Martinez pushed to join Manchester United, Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf alleged that Martinez went ‘nose to nose’ with Ajax’s then-technical director Gerry Hamstra as he labelled him a ‘f***ing nobody’.
Sources at United have long said that Martinez is ferocious at the best of times and if he isn’t in a good mood he’ll stop at nothing in letting those making him mad know, making it likely futile for any of United’s media team to cut short this stunning exchange on Prime Video.
Martinez’s contract may well be playing on his mind given it is due to expire at the end of the current season.
United hold an option to extend the deal by an additional year until June 2028 but Martinez is looking for more security and the silence on such extension could well be a major bone of contention.
But technical directors, executive directors, you name it, are figures that Martinez has no qualms calling out, as Wilcox and Co just discovered.
Martinez is no nonsense on and off the pitch – but his lingering contract situation may be a key factor in his reason to go nuclear in front of the microphone after the defeat in Madrid
WHAT WILL THE BOARD DO?
If they have any sense, Wilcox comes out and gives an interview. If they are really smart you get Wilcox and Martinez in the same room and part of the same interview for a no-holds-barred chat.
Perhaps Amazon’s All or Nothing crew will get the best of it, perhaps they won’t and the shot-callers remain in the shadows.
But much like Ruben Amorim away to Leeds United last season, in what proved to be his final act, when he directly called out the likes of Wilcox and recruitment chief Christopher Vivell, there has to be a reaction from upstairs or it sets the tone that they are sitting ducks for players to take shots at.
The next few hours and days will tell us a lot about who really holds the power inside Old Trafford.
WILL OTHER PLAYERS TAKE OFFENCE?
Tielemans, one of the summer recruits, looked suitably unimpressed and senior agents in the game with players across Premier League clubs got in touch with Daily Mail Sport on Tuesday night to talk shop about Martinez’s comments all with the message that it will be incredibly awkward this week for Martinez.
‘It is annoying and disappointing coming here and I am not seeing my team trying to get an amazing result,’ Martinez said, also adding that the display was ‘very poor’, which felt overly harsh.
Former United striker and club great Wayne Rooney was flabbergasted at Martinez’s decision to go nuclear in front of a microphone, firstly suggesting further recruitment would have taken his spot in the side and secondly for stepping out of line where he hasn’t got the right to do so.
‘If you’re Baleba or Tielemans, you’re going to want to speak to Lisandro as it’s disrespectful to them,’ said Rooney. ‘Only Bruno [Fernandes] can come out and say that.
Marcus Rashford and Youri Tielemans, both new to this group in the summer, may take offence
‘It looks like a player trying to look after himself. It’s sad because you need players to stick together or something like that can rip the dressing-room apart.’
There is a risk that the outburst is viewed by team-mates as self-preservation, but others will agree with him and as a highly respected member of the dressing room, what he says does carry a great deal of meaning.
But if you’re one of the summer arrivals, you’re furious, make no doubts about that.
DOES MARTINEZ NEED TO BE DROPPED?
Winless in five games and heading to the cauldron that is Elland Road to take on Leeds United, no, Martinez cannot be dropped.
Because they don’t have Shaw, they don’t have Dorgu, they don’t have Mazraoui, Matthijs de Ligt hasn’t played since last November, Heaven is young, and Martinez’s experience is too valuable.
But there will be ramifications, there has to be ramifications, any time anyone goes nuclear at those in positions of power above them.
Carrick was pretty guarded in the aftermath, saying in his post-match press conference: ‘I think it’s a little bit the emotion of the game.
‘I need to find out a bit more about it before I can say if and what is going to be done.
‘As a group, I don’t doubt the togetherness. But the boys are hurting. They’re passionate, they want to do well, they’re definitely hurting.’
The truth of the matter is many within the fan-base agree with what Martinez was saying and those such as Wilcox and Berrada too often get away with not facing the music publicly for their decisions.
But the other side of it is where Rooney and fellow pundit Ashley Young are right. Walking back into that dressing room after picking apart the performance and suggesting the summer arrivals are not up to the required level is a lofty ledge to fall from.
The reverberations of this interview could well last for weeks.
