Three of Nigeria’s players who featured in the women’s national team, Super Falcons’ 5-0 win over Comoros have received individual accolades for their performances during the game at Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne, Ogun State.
Sports247 reports that, although Nigeria’s huge victory, which took their scoreline to 7-0 on aggregate, was blighted by an early injury to team captain, Rasheedat Ajibade, the squad held firm and romped into the next round in style.
In the wake of the encounter, interim coach of the side, Augustine Eguavoen praised the individual efforts of Christy Ucheibe, Shukurat Oladipo and Joy Igbokwe, who stood firm in the heart of the Falcons’ defence.
Eguavoen, who is also the substantive technical director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) showered encomiums on the trio for what he referred to as their all-round impressive performances and versatility during Tuesday’s game.
Eguavoen, who is also a former defender, captain and head coach of Nigeria’s men’s squad, Super Eagles, added that he values players that can feature in multiple positions during a match, as flexibility is an important value in the national team.
“Maybe because I was a central defender. We recently spoke about a player who can play in more than one position. Such a player is very important. We are so blessed to have Christy Ucheibe.
“Ucheibe and Shukurat Oladipo are on top of their game. Joy Igbokwe is another fantastic player from Nasarawa Amazons. Home-grown. I am very impressed with the defensive line,” he acknowledged.
Sports247 reports that ‘Egu’ also explained that players who can feature as centre back and in defensive midfield provide additional tactical options that help a team adjust to different situations during matches.
