IndyCar driver Jack Harvey announces cancer diagnosis at 33… but vows to compete at next year's Indy 500

IndyCar driver Jack Harvey has been diagnosed with cancer but has nonetheless vowed to be ready for next year’s Indianapolis 500.

The 33-year-old Brit, who has raced part-time on the IndyCar Series, revealed his diagnosis Tuesday on X, although he stopped short of specifying the form of cancer he’s facing.

‘My entire career has been about fighting for what’s next,’ he wrote in a statement. ‘The next opportunity. The next chance to prove myself. The next time I could get back in the car and show what I’m capable of.

‘There have been moments when the path forward was obvious, and plenty when it wasn’t,’ he continued. ‘I’ve had to earn opportunities, fight to keep them, and learn how to keep moving when things didn’t go the way I planned.

‘But through all of it, I’ve never stopped believing that there was something worth fighting for.

‘Life has delivered a new fight to my doorstep. I have recently been diagnosed with cancer.’

Harvey, who finished ninth at the 2020 Indy 500 but came in just 22nd last year, went on to lay out his plans for the upcoming season.

‘My goals for 2027 have not changed,’ he wrote. ‘I plan to be on the grid [at the season opener in St. Petersburg] and strapping back into a race car this May in preparation for the Indianapolis 500.

‘I am receiving excellent care and support from the team around me, my family, friends, [Dreyer & Reinbold Racing], FOX, INDYCAR and many more.

‘I’ve never backed away from a challenge in my life and this circumstance is no different. So… Let’s fight.’

Harvey has received an outpouring of support from racing fans and his IndyCar rivals.

‘We’re with you brother,’ friend and driver Conor Daly wrote on X, ‘you got this.’

‘Sending all of our support,’ read a message from Chip Ganassi Racing.

One fan added: ‘The entire IndyCar community is behind you Jack. Be strong!’

A former member of McLaren’s Young Driver Programme, Harvey raced in Formula 3, GP3 and the Indy Lights series before moving up to IndyCar, America’s top open-wheeled racing circuit.

His last win came on the Indy Lights series in 2015.
