Veteran defensive end Marcus Davenport has reportedly decided to retire only a day after making his debut for the Chicago Bears.
The 30-year-old made one tackle in 12 snaps in the Bears’ 23-12 victory over the New York Jets at Soldier Field.
Just 24 hours later, however, the pass-rusher asked to be released by the Chicago practice squad – and the Bears agreed.
That is according to ESPN and NFL Network, who claim Davenport has chosen to call time on his career four weeks into his ninth NFL season.
The 30-year-old was selected by the New Orleans Saints in the first round of the 2018 draft.
After spending five seasons in New Orleans, Davenport had spells with the Minnesota Vikings and Detroit Lions before signing with the Bears earlier this year.

By moving to Chicago, he reunited with Dennis Allen, who was his defensive coordinator with the Saints and now runs Ben Johnson’s Bears defense.
But their second spell together was short-lived, with Davenport retiring just 12 snaps into his career in Chicago.
Over more than eight seasons in the NFL, the 30-year-old amassed 78 regular-season appearances, including 43 starts, and 25 sacks.
But Davenport has struggled for gametime since leaving the Saints after the 2022 campaign. Across his time in Minnesota, Detroit and Chicago, Davenport started just 11 games.
