The same region that produced gridiron legends like Jim Brown, John Mackey and Boomer Esiason was once again the center of the high school football universe on Monday as the country’s longest winning streak came to an end.
With a 21-14 upset at Hofstra University on Long Island, the Massapequa Chiefs snapped Garden City’s nation-leading 68-game unbeaten mark thanks to a late interception and game-winning touchdown pass in the final moments of play.
‘Give extended credit to them — they came out to play,’ defensive captain Ryan Chabus told The New York Post of his crucial interception. ‘I knew I had to make a play. That’s what football players do. That’s what three-time Long Island champions do.’
‘It was definitely one of the closest games we’ve ever played in,’ senior wideout Dylan Milio told The New York Post after hauling in the winning touchdown catch. ‘It meant a little more because now we could break history.’
Milio went on to describe his team’s excitement for the battle of the unbeatens – a game that was postponed from Saturday until Monday due to last weekend’s nor’easter: ‘In school, we were not really paying attention to teachers today, honestly.’
Garden City had won 10 straight Nassau County titles heading into the season, which is a step Massapequa sees itself taking in 2026.

‘Ultimately, our goal isn’t about winning this game — it’s about putting ourselves in position to win the last game of the year,’ athletic director Ed Ramirez said last week, as quoted by The Post.

Garden City had not dropped a game since losing to Lindenhurst on November 30, 2019.
Both schools have their own football traditions, to varying degrees.
Massapequa has produced a number of NFL players, including three members of the Baldinger family (Brian, Gary and Rich), not to mention Hollywood’s Baldwin brothers and Jerry Seinfeld. Garden City, meanwhile, has produced former NFL punter Dave Jennings, as well as former North Carolina All-American running back Don McCauley.
The longest winning streak in high school football history belongs to California’s De La Salle, which had 151 straight victories between 1992 and 2004.
