Trent Alexander-Arnold might have left Liverpool fans feeling betrayed when he departed a little over a year ago for Real Madrid, but the right-back is destined to return to Anfield sooner or later amid ongoing issues in Spain.
Trent is attracting interest from numerous Premier League sides as his struggles at Real Madrid are ongoing.
He has yet to win the faith of new manager Jose Mourinho, who preferred Denzel Dumfries to him during the derby prior to the international break. He has started only three of seven games, and in one of these he was used as a central midfielder.
This has triggered a reaction from his representatives, who have got in touch with several Premier League sides.
Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea have all expressed an interest in a deal and are monitoring the Englishman’s position at Real Madrid closely, TeamTalk reports.
Trent is not expected to leave in January, though a deal next summer has not been written off should his situation fail to improve.
Liverpool remains Trent’s natural home
A return to Liverpool is the most logical destination for Alexander-Arnold, despite the fact that he was booed upon his return to Anfield with Real Madrid in a Champions League clash last season.
The fans may feel wronged about the manner of his exit to the Bernabeu side, yet there is little doubt that a return to his home city would make most sense from a personal and footballing perspective.
This is backed up by SciSports, which says that Liverpool remain the optimal club for the 27-year-old star based on its Career Advice tool, which gives the Reds a Club Fit score of 82.
In terms of style and formation, Andoni Iraola’s side remain ideal for Trent, who would provide an upgrade on Jeremie Frimpong, who has been disappointing as his replacement.
He knows the club inside and out, and is the type of player who has the capacity to win the fans back.
Why Liverpool makes more sense than the alternatives
Besides Liverpool, where else could Trent realistically go?
Manchester City are toxic following the reporting that they have been found guilty of 114 of 115 charges levelled against them by the Premier League, and in any case a move to the Etihad would only increase the sense of betrayal against the player in his home city – something he will be keen not to fan.
At Chelsea, meanwhile, Trent would be reunited with Xabi Alonso, who regularly benched him in Madrid and would likely use him as a wing-back in London.
Premier League champions Arsenal are also thought to be following his situation, but while they are given a Club Fit score of 72, digging below the numbers, he appears an unlikely fit for Mikel Arteta. The Spaniard has tended towards full-backs who can operate both in the middle and wide in the defence, which is not something Alexander-Arnold is capable of.
Burying the hatchet and returning to Liverpool therefore seems the only logical move back to the Premier League for Trent at this point of his career – and given that it’s a deal that would also suit the Reds, should be seen as a very real possibility ahead of next summer.
